Common questions, honest answers
Six of the questions we get most often. Costs are NZD private-sector ranges drawn from public clinic pages — your actual quote will vary.
How do I check that a NZ surgeon is actually qualified? +
Three free public checks — do all three before booking surgery:
- MCNZ register at mcnz.org.nz — confirms current annual practising certificate and vocational scope. For plastic surgery the scope must read "Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery", not "Cosmetic Medicine" (those are separate scopes).
- NZAPS Find-a-Surgeon at plasticsurgery.org.nz — NZAPS membership requires FRACS plastic surgery fellowship plus ongoing CPD.
- RACS / FRACS at surgeons.org — FRACS plastic surgery = 5+ year specialty training after medical school.
"Cosmetic surgeon", "skin surgeon" and "surgeon with an interest in plastic surgery" are not protected titles in NZ — anyone with a basic medical degree can use them. The protected title is plastic and reconstructive surgeon on the MCNZ register.
How much does LASIK cost in NZ? +
$3,500–$5,000 per eye is the typical NZ private range in 2026. See the per-clinic breakdown.
What does a breast surgery quote actually include? +
A defensible NZ quote bundles five things:
- Surgeon fee (the largest single component)
- Hospital + theatre + anaesthetist fee
- Implant cost (for augmentation — typically Mentor, Motiva or Allergan, all Medsafe-notified)
- Pre-op consultations (usually 1–2 included)
- Post-op follow-up for the first 12 months (usually 4–6 visits)
Augmentation typically lands $15,500–$22,000. Reduction $15,000–$20,000. Compare clinic quotes. If a quote is dramatically below this range, ask what's not included — common omissions are anaesthetist, hospital, or revision in the first 12 months.
Is plastic / cosmetic surgery covered by ACC or insurance in NZ? +
It depends on whether the procedure is reconstructive or purely cosmetic:
- ACC covers accident-related reconstructive work (trauma, burns, melanoma excision after biopsy).
- Te Whatu Ora covers medically-necessary reconstructive surgery (post-mastectomy reconstruction, congenital deformity, severe burns) — subject to clinical prioritisation criteria, with long waitlists for non-urgent cases.
- Southern Cross / nib / AIA typically cover medically-necessary reconstructive work and may cover breast reduction if there's documented neck/back pain. Purely cosmetic procedures are excluded under almost every NZ policy.
Always check your policy schedule and get written pre-approval before surgery — verbal indications are not binding.
Are dental implants covered by Southern Cross or nib? +
Mostly no. NZ private health insurance generally excludes dental implants because they're classed as cosmetic — even when they replace a lost tooth. There are two exceptions worth checking:
- Southern Cross Wellbeing One / Two includes a small ($500–1,500) dental benefit that can offset crown costs but not the implant itself.
- Accident-related tooth loss may be partially covered by ACC's dental treatment scheme — apply within 12 months of the accident.
Most implant patients pay private and use a finance plan (Q Card, Afterpay Health, or in-clinic 24-month interest-free terms). A single implant + crown is typically $4,500–$8,000; multiple implants or All-on-4 reach $25,000–$45,000.
How does ClinicCompare make money — and does that affect what I see? +
Honestly: when you submit a quote enquiry, we may share your details with up to 3 NZ medical clinics matched to your procedure and region (with your explicit consent under HIPC Rule 11). Partner clinics pay us per converted patient — never per lead, never per click.
Our ranking on /best/ pages is governed by a fixed published formula: log₁₀(reviews + 1) + verified bonus + NZAPS bonus. Partners cannot pay to appear higher. Listing is free for any NZ clinic with current MCNZ / Dental Council / NZAPS registration. Read our full methodology.
