What chiropractic care involves
Chiropractic care focuses on diagnosing and managing mechanical disorders of the spine and other joints. A typical first visit includes a history, posture and movement assessment, and may include manual adjustment, soft-tissue work, exercise prescription and ergonomic advice. Some practices also use rehabilitation tools, dry needling or shockwave therapy.
Consultation length: Initial consultations are typically 30–45 minutes; follow-up visits 15–25 minutes.
Follow-up: A typical care plan involves 4–8 visits over 6–12 weeks for an acute episode, with home exercises and posture changes between visits.
Common conditions chiropractors treat
- lower-back pain (the most common reason for visits)
- neck pain and tension headaches
- shoulder, elbow, wrist and knee pain
- sciatica and radiating limb pain
- pregnancy-related pelvic pain
- post-injury rehabilitation under ACC
Cost & ACC funding
Typical fees: $60–$120 per visit. Initial consultations typically run $80–$150 (longer than follow-ups). Most practices accept eftpos and offer Q Card or Afterpay for treatment plans.
ACC cover: ACC covers most assessment and treatment costs when the issue results from an injury — typically you pay a $25–$45 surcharge per visit. ACC does not fund treatment for chronic conditions that aren't injury-related.
Choosing a chiropractor
Chiropractor services in New Zealand are a regulated health profession in New Zealand. Every practising chiropractor must hold an Annual Practising Certificate from the New Zealand Chiropractic Board and works under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003.
Verify registration on the NZ Chiropractic Board public register, check that the Annual Practising Certificate is current, and look for chiropractors who explain their assessment findings clearly and refer on when a complaint sits outside their scope.
Verify any practitioner on the public register at chiropracticboard.org.nz before booking.

Chiropractic care: questions
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?
No — chiropractors are first-contact practitioners in New Zealand. You can book directly without a GP referral, including for ACC-funded injury treatment.
Is chiropractic care covered by ACC?
ACC covers most assessment and treatment costs when the issue results from an injury — typically you pay a $25–$45 surcharge per visit. ACC does not fund treatment for chronic conditions that aren't injury-related.
How many sessions will I need?
Typically 4–8 visits for an acute musculoskeletal episode, less for a single isolated complaint. A registered chiropractor will tell you if you are not improving and will refer you on if your symptoms suggest a different diagnosis.
What's the difference between chiropractic and physiotherapy?
Both treat musculoskeletal complaints but with different emphases. Chiropractors typically focus on spinal joint mechanics with manual adjustments; physiotherapists usually emphasise graded exercise, manual therapy and rehabilitation. Many patients see both at different stages of recovery.
